When Will My Baby’s First Set of Teeth Come In and Why are They so Important?

There are only two sets of teeth you have in a lifetime. The first set are called the primary and the second set are your permanent. When a baby is born, they already have their undeveloped teeth in their jaws. These are called tooth buds. The tooth buds are the foundations of your future teeth.

The first primary teeth usually begin to appear between six months to one year old. By the age of three years old, the child usually will have their full set of 20 primary teeth.

The primary teeth are very important in your child’s health and development. They play an important role in learning how to chew, speak, and even smile.

If a child should lose a baby tooth too early, the tooth bud for that permanent tooth can actually start to drift into that missing space. This drifting can result in crooked or crowded adult teeth causing future problems.
